Hurricane Katrina Death Toll Likely in the Thousands

by Kevin Caruso

September 4, 2005

The death toll from Hurricane Katrina will probably be in the thousands, according to Michael Leavitt, U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary.

The current official death toll as of September 4th is 59 people, but it will not be possible to determine the actual death toll until most of the water is drained for New Orleans and complete inspections of all buildings can be conducted

A mandatory evacuation order was given to the residents of New Orleans, but many residents decided to stay and died in the flood.
