The Hurricane Katrina Survivors ARE NOT Refugees
So Don’t Call Them Refugees

by Kevin Caruso

September 5, 2005

This is the definition of “refugee” –

One who “flees” in search of refuge, as in times of war, political oppression, or religious persecution.

The Hurricane Katrina survivors ARE NOT “fleeing,” they are being rescued and evacuated.

And, not only is it inaccurate to call these great people “refugees,” it is also insensitive.

And these precious Hurricane Katrina survivors deserve the highest level of sensitivity that we can give them.

Call these wonderful people “survivors” or “evacuees.”

And give them the highest level of respect possible.

They deserve it.

By the way, they also are angels -- and they are our brothers and sisters.
